Abstract
This panel will explore the recent growth and development of the contemporary art market in South Korea, focussing on the institutions and organisations sustaining this growth across the public, private and commercial sectors. It will consider the positioning of Seoul as a vibrant international cultural capital, and the instrumental factors that have contributed to its recent development as a global art market destination. The panel will examine the structures of public and private museums and galleries within the domestic art market, and the impact of the relationships between these organisations on its recent development. It will consider the recent attraction of international art market brands and institutions on the growth of the regional market, and the potential impact of these developments on international collecting preferences. The panel will identify current and future career trajectories for a range of local artists and consider possible strategies through which these artists might succeed in achieving international recognition. It will conclude by examining challenges and opportunities associated within sustaining the growth of the South Korean art market and suggest possible factors contributing to the development of this unique cultural ecosystem.
